The quiet, tree-lined streets of Jamaica Estates, Queens, welcome the arrival of Leo and Rada Jacobs, the proud new owners of a historic Tudor mansion in the affluent neighborhood.
This magnificent estate has not only garnered attention for its grandeur but also for the ambitions and community spirit that the Jacobs family brings to the neighborhood.
Leo and Rada Jacobs are no ordinary homeowners. Deeply rooted in the Bukharian Jewish community, their vision extends far beyond the walls of their new residence. Their move to Jamaica Estates signifies a commitment to positively impacting both the Bukharian community and the broader neighborhood, reinforcing the values of unity, tradition, and community service.
A Vision for Community Involvement
Leo Jacobs, with his eyes set on public service, aspires to represent his community in the political arena. Whether as a federal or state senator, assemblyman, or councilman, Leo, a lawyer, is determined to ensure that the voices of the Jamaica Estates community are heard and respected. His active involvement in the Bukharian Jewish Community Center (BJCC) and as a regular attendee of it demonstrates his dedication to his faith and his community. He is also the founder of the Bukharian Law Association.
The Jacobs family has outlined several key initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of life in Jamaica Estates by working with the local state and federal representatives.
They plan to lobby more gardens and parks, offering green spaces where families can gather, children can play, and the beauty of nature can be enjoyed. In addition, they envision hosting a variety of Bukharian Jewish cultural events, from prayer gatherings to couples’ events, all within the welcoming environment of their home. These efforts aim to preserve and celebrate Bukharian Jewish traditions while fostering a sense of unity and belonging among all residents of the neighborhood.
A Memorable Mezuzah Party
On September 1, the Jacobs family hosted a memorable gathering to mark the beginning of their new journey in Jamaica Estates—a mezuzah party that brought together family, friends, and esteemed members of the community.
At 7 p.m., the first 14 mezuzahs were affixed to the doorposts of their home, each accompanied by blessings from rabbis and prayers for a future filled with peace and prosperity.
The event was a reflection of the Jacobs’ deep respect for tradition and their desire to share their joy with those who have supported them. Guests were treated to a reception that featured a culinary feast prepared by none other than Michael Zavolunov of DaMikele Hospitality, along with his son, Ilya Zavolunov. The delectable dishes, including lamb and rice pilaf, were a tribute to the rich Bukharian heritage and were enjoyed by all in attendance.
Music, an essential element of any Bukharian celebration, was provided by Johnny Versace, whose repertoire of classic Bukharian tunes evoked memories of the old country and set the tone for an evening of joy and camaraderie.
Toasts were raised by many, including Leon Nektalov, president of the BJCC; Baruch Babaev, chief rabbi of the BJCC; Rabbi Cohen; Rabbi Vaknin, chief rabbi of the youth minyan at the BJCC; Rabbi Wolowik; and Rabbi Zalman. Each expressed their heartfelt blessings and hopes for the Jacobs family’s future in Jamaica Estates.
Gratitude and Future Aspirations
The Jacobs family extends their deepest gratitude to all who attended the mezuzah party and who have supported them on this journey. Special thanks go to Leon Nektalov for his leadership and dedication to the Bukharian community; Rabbi Baruch Babaev for his spiritual guidance; Rabbi Cohen, Rabbi Vaknin, Rabbi Wolowik, and Rabbi Zalman for their blessings and wisdom; and Rafael Nektalov, editor-in-chief of the Bukharian Times, for his unwavering support. The presence of guests from the neighborhood, as well as close family and friends, made the occasion truly unforgettable.
As Leo and Rada Jacobs settle into their new home, they are eager to continue their work in strengthening the bonds of the Bukharian community while also reaching out to all residents of Jamaica Estates. Their vision of a united, vibrant, and thriving community is one that they are committed to making a reality. The future of Jamaica Estates is bright with the Jacobs family as part of its fabric, and their contributions will undoubtedly leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.
