New York City recently marked the 33rd anniversary of the Republic of Uzbekistan’s independence with a series of vibrant celebrations across the city.

The festivities began on August 28 with a prominent event, co-sponsored by Silk Road Foundation and the Uzbek Mission to the United Nations, at the U.N. headquarters, where Uzbek nationals and Uzbek Americans working in the United States, and representatives from various diplomatic corps gathered over a plentiful buffet and performances.

Members of the Bukharian Jewish diaspora were notably present, including Rafael Nektalov, Leon Nektalov, Boris Kandov, and Roman Kaykov, reflecting their enduring connection to Uzbekistan and highlighting their significant role within the global community.

H.E. Ulugbek Lapasov, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Uzbekistan to the UN, delivered a heartfelt congratulation to attendees, emphasizing the large-scale reforms and increased international interest in Uzbekistan. The national songs performed at the event added a special touch to the proceedings.

The city’s celebrations continued with a mass march on Sunday, September 1 along Wall Street in Manhattan, which was attended by New York City Mayor Eric Adams. The Mayor expressed his pride in the Uzbek community, stating on X.com, «Happy Uzbekistan Independence Day! Our Uzbek community in New York City is a proud one and we’re so proud they call our city home.»

Additionally, a special reception was held on September 2 at the kosher restaurant Troyka in Forest Hills. Co-hosted by Mr. Boris Kandov, President of the Bukharian Congress of USA and Canada, and H.E. Mr. Ulugbek Lapasov from the Uzbek Mission to the UN, the event further celebrated the rich cultural ties between the Bukharian Jewish community and their Uzbek heritage.

The citywide celebrations underscore New York’s diverse cultural landscape and the strong connections between its international communities.
