QUEENS — On Sunday, Troyka Restaurant hosted the highly anticipated Award Ceremony for the finalists of the «Person of the Year 2024» competition. This year’s event stood out not only for its distinguished nominees but also for reflecting the past year’s intense civic engagement amidst the ongoing conflict in Israel.
«This competition is unlike any before,» wrote organizer Dr. Zoya Maksumova.
The finalists included three notable individuals from Israel: Yuri Iskhakov, Mark Yadgarov, and Avraham Pinchasi. From America, nine prominent figures were recognized: Gennady (Gavriel) Benyaminov with Yury Vasilyev, Rafael Nektalov, Svetlana Levitina, Nargiz Malaeva, Michael Wostok, Lyuba Pilosova, Dora Sofieva-Nektalova, and Jeremy Sofiev.
The event highlighted the exceptional modesty of these finalists.

«Almost every one of them wanted to stay in the background until they finally agreed that their noble deeds should serve as examples, especially for the younger generation,» said Maksumova.
Their dedication, however, became a source of inspiration, aligning with the organization’s goal of promoting community spirit and generosity through exemplary role models.
Among the finalists, four were women. Their impact was profound. Svetlana, Nargiz, Lyuba, and Dora were recognized for their extensive community work, especially since October 7, showcasing the resilience and strength often attributed to women in challenging times.
Guests enjoyed the company of the event’s charismatic hosts, Dr. Maksumova, Avi Benjamin and Eduard Zavolunov, who added a unique flair to the festivities.
The celebration also marked the 25th anniversary of «Ladies’ World» magazine and «Esther-a-malka,» highlighting the dedication of activists and volunteers in the community. In addition to honoring the laureates, the evening featured special surprise awards for those whom for 25 years tirelessly and generously supported the women’s organization and magazine.
