The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) is investigating the fatal shooting of 46-year-old Djamshed Nematov by NYPD officers in Forest Hills on Friday, March 8th, 2024.

Incident Details
On the evening of March 8th, at approximately 6:54 pm, four officers from the NYPD’s 112th Precinct responded to a 911 call reporting a stabbing at an apartment building on 62nd Avenue. Upon arriving at the second floor, officers encountered Nematov armed with a knife. They allegedly yelled, «Drop the knife.» Despite their commands, the man charged towards the officers, said NYPD Chief Jeffrey B. Maddrey in a press briefing on Friday.
In response, a sergeant deployed a taser, while two other officers fired their service weapons, striking Nematov. Approximately four shots were fired.
«It was a fast-paced, dynamic situation,» said the Chief.
Officers rendered medical aid until EMS arrived and transported him to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased, according to the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Public Information (DCPI).

Investigation

The OSI is mandated by New York law (Executive Law Section 70-b) to investigate whenever a police action results in a person’s death. The investigation will focus on the events leading up to the shooting, the use of force by the officers, and the surrounding circumstances.

Additional Information

The NYPD’s investigation revealed that prior to the officers’ arrival, a 43-year-old female, identified as Nematov’s wife Amira, had been stabbed in the abdomen during the altercation. «She was holding and bleeding from her stomach,» said Chief Maddrey. She was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition but is now reported to be in stable condition after receiving treatment for her injuries. Two officers were also taken to a hospital for evaluation. A knife was recovered from the scene.
Reports indicate the shooting occurred during a domestic dispute at a 1st birthday party. There were adults and children present at the time of the shooting.
This is a developing story, and further details may be released as the investigation progresses.
