She Turned Her Darkest Moment Into Light for Others—And It’s Been Shining for 30 Years
On October 26, a beautiful and emotional celebration took place at the Bukharian Jewish Center in Jamaica Estates, marking the 30th Anniversary of WOWI–World Women Immigrants, founded by Svetlana Khanimova-Levitin.
The story of WOWI began in 1995, after the passing of Svetlana’s mother, Raya Shamalova, who died of breast cancer at the age of 64. In her memory, Svetlana founded an organization to help women battling cancer and those in need. What started as a small mission of compassion has grown into an international movement of kindness and community support.
Over the years, WOWI has helped countless families, providing food, furniture, and emotional support. Working in real estate, Svetlana used her connections to collect donated furniture from Long Island homes and deliver it to families who had none. The organization also hosted educational and holiday events, honoring dedicated women with the title “Eshet Chayil” (Woman of Valor.)
In recent years, WOWI’s work expanded to support Israel’s soldiers and their families. After the tragic events of October 7, 2023, Svetlana and her team sent warm clothing, boots, vests, and hot meals directly to soldiers on the battlefield. In 2024, she traveled to Israel to meet with wounded soldiers and families of the fallen. A fundraising event in New York helped provide meals and aid to those affected, and a short documentary film by IsrailKhay Yakubov captured this touching journey.

The anniversary evening was filled with music, joy, and gratitude, celebrating life, unity, and compassion.
Svetlana expressed heartfelt thanks to all sponsors and guests, especially Mr. Boris Aronov, owner of the Bukharian Jewish Center, and Roman Khanimov, President of the Samarkand Fund, Dr. Mariya Moshe, Dr. Stella Ilyayeva and other sponsors.
“I founded this organization in memory of my mother, who devoted her life to helping others. Thirty years later, her kindness continues to live through all of us,” said Svetlana Levitin.
WOWI’s 30th Anniversary was not just a celebration—it was a shining reminder that one woman’s vision can inspire thousands and make the world a better place.
